What do I do if my foster animal is sick?

HSCNF offers all veterinary care. Bring your foster to our facilities for a consultation. To make an appointment, please contact us at 352-373-5855 or fosterteam@humanesocietyncfl.org

How much and how often do I feed my foster animal?

Since all animals are different, the foster team will provide you with specific information about your foster regarding the feeding schedule.

Can I adopt my foster animal?

Yes, let the foster team know if you are interested in adopting your foster animal and they will help you with the adoption process.

What if my foster animal is having an emergency?

Only if there is an immediate emergency, please call our after-hours emergency number at 352-577-9119 and leave a message. Fosters are not allowed to take their foster animals to a clinic unless approved by the HSCNF.

What is considered an emergency?

Here is a list of things that DO and DON’T require calling the emergency line.

Will I have to find a home for the foster animal myself?

No, however, you are welcome to help us find potential owners and share the information on social media.

Is this a no kill shelter?

Yes, we are a no-kill shelter, which means we do not euthanize animals except in severe cases. 

Is my foster animal spayed or neutered?

Yes, all animals are spayed or neutered before being put up for adoption or available to foster. In certain cases, kittens and puppies might not be spayed or neutered because they are too young.

Is my foster animal fully vaccinated?

Yes, all animals are fully vaccinated before being put up for adoption or available to foster. In certain cases, kittens and puppies might not be fully vaccinated because they are too young.

What do I do if my kitten or puppy is lethargic and not eating?

During business hours, stop by The Humane Society office for immediate assistance. If the issue happens outside business hours, call our emergency line at 352-577-9119

I am interested in adopting an animal that is currently at a foster home, what should I do?

Please submit an adoption application through our website, and we will contact you to set up a meet and greet with the foster animal.

What if I go on vacation or have a business trip?

Notify the foster department about your trip as soon as possible, so they can help you find a replacement or set up a day and time for you to bring your foster animal back to the shelter.

How much time will fostering take?

It depends on the animal, but the average time is four to five weeks.

Can I take my animal to adoption events?

Yes, as long as the adoption coordinator has contacted you and coordinated for your foster animal to be displayed at the adoption event.
